Catholic Bishop Warns Politicians On Violence

The Chairman of the Uganda Episcopal Conference Rt Rev Dr Joseph Antony Zziwa has sounded a strong warning to the Ugandans especially the candidates vying for different political positions, to ensure that they avoid violence, during this period of campaigns.

Bishop Zziwa who is also the Bishop of Kiyinda Mityana diocese, says the candidates must be careful with the words and behaviors they show in public during this period.

He cited those who use abusive language and words that provoke others in their campaigns and says they must change.

 “We are Uganda, living in the same country and so we must remain united even after the political season,” he says.

This was in his homily he delivered at the 44th diocesan day celebrations, held at the diocesan Cathedral in Kiyinda on Sunday.

Dr Zziwa asked the faithful to pray for the nation so that the election period goes on well without any challenges.

He further asks Political candidates to avoid words and acts that tarnish Religions which can even cause religious differences.

The diocese marked the day, as the Catholic Church also celebrated the day of Christ the King.

Dr Zziwa asked the Christians to ensure that they strengthen their faith by engaging in acts of evangelization.

He explained and tipped that evangelization is not supposed to be done by only the ordained priests but any Christian can do it by engaging in goo acts, that promote peace and hope in life of other people.

This year’s Celebrations have been led by the faithfulls from the parishes of St Matia Mulumba Kiganda Parish, St Simon Katuugo Parish, St Charles Lwanga Lwangiri Parish, Our Lady of Assumption Mirembe Maria Parish and St John the Baptist Kkungu Parish all from Kassanda Deanery.

The Diocesan Pastoral Coordinator Rev Fr Lazarus Kiggundu read a full report of the activities in the ending year where he was happy to note that more the diocese has supported many people to improve their lives both socially and economically.

He says that this ending year, the diocese has injected in more money in the loan projects where they have introduced a commercial motorcycle loan, called the ‘KMD bodaboda loan’ and over fifty-six million has already been distributed to the riders to acquire motorcycles.

According to Fr Kiggundu, a number of schools have been given high breed Frisian cows and more are to get this year.

In this project, the diocese intends to have the learners and students get skills of rearing animals in zero grazing system as they get milk for drinking at School.

Over seven hundred and fifty new more families have been introduced to the modern farming methods which the bishop hopes that will socially and economically boost their lives.

In these projects, more families too have been supported in coffee planting, and a nursery bed from seedlings are supplied was set up at Kiganda Parish, which is in Kassanda district.

More two hundred and fifty-four (254) Children with disabilities have been supported to acquire education of which over fifty have got vocational skills and further support to start businesses or get jobs.
